Over de Streep (Cross the Line)
Produced by Jessica Villerius
Air Date: Four Seasons 2011 - 2014
After seeing the program on Oprah, Dutch documentary filmmaker Jessica Villerius knew that she had to bring the program to the young people in her country and created a foundation to support the program in the Netherlands. She also created the format for the acclaimed television series titled Over de Streep (Cross the Line) which featured six episodes each for four seasons. In each episode host Arie Boomsma travels to local communities to learn about the lives of young people at school and home and brings them into the studio for a remarkable Challenge Day experience of connection and transformation. The episodes conclude with the youth, parents, and school officials reflecting on their experience.
Students are challenged to share their feelings and emotions during Challenge Day’s if you really knew me exercise, which helps create greater empathy and understanding. And in one of the most impactful exercises of each Challenge Day, “Cross The Line,” (for which the series is named) students experience at a very deep level that they are not alone.
In the 2016 series titled Als Je Me Echt Zou Kennen (If You Really Knew Me), Jessica films the program with talented host Angela Schijf and U.S. Challenge Day leaders in a new setting with adults in recognizable environments such as elder care homes, athletic teams, and hospitals. Both series are in Dutch with English subtitles.
